The American Legion Legacy Scholarship
This is a needs-based scholarship to provide further financial support for those students seeking higher education who have exhausted all federal and state grants / scholarships available to them.
Eligibility
Eligible children are defined as biologic, legally adopted or the children of a spouse by prior marriage or dependent children as defined by the United States Armed Services of active-duty United States military, National Guard and military reservists who were federalized and died on active duty or sustained a 50% or greater disability rating as defined the Department of Veterans Affairs on or after 9/11/2001.
Monetary Provision
- Up to $20,000 scholarship for children of the fallen.
- Up to $5000 for children of the disabled.
Application Dates
Students meeting eligibility may apply from January 1st through April 1st. Winners are announced each May. Students have one year to utilize the scholarship award.
Required Application Documents
- For children of fallen servicemembers, an official military death certificate (Form DD1300)
- For children of qualifying disabled veterans, an official disability rating paperwork from the VA and a DD214 showing dates of service and condition upon discharge
- FAFSA Summary showing Expected Family Contribution
- If applicable, any award notifications from federal or state veteran benefits programs (for example, The Gunnery Sergeant Fry Scholarship, GI-Bill benefits, etc.)
- Financial Aid Package notification from their prospective/current institution of higher education for the upcoming school year
- Breakdown of all education-related expenses to include but not limited to tuition, fees, books, program costs, meal plan, housing and transportation
- High school senior or high school graduate currently accepted or attending an accredited institution of higher education within the United States
