District Four had its annual Oratorical Contest on February 20th at the Mason City Municipal Building. This contest had special significance for Doug Dunaway Post 790 as this was the first year for us to sponsor a high school student for the American Legion Oratorical Contest. It also happened to be the second oratorical “chapter” for Ms. Elisha Kenniv after recently winning the Hamilton County competition for 2021-2022 (Pictured above 1st row on the right). This day she battled two worthy contestants who had come well prepared.
The Past Commander–Steve Lieurance, Elisha’s academic supporter–Rachel Porter, and I were on fire and elated to see Elisha present her prepared oratory entitled “Morality, the Art of Keeping this Exceptional Nation,” and the impromptu special topic follow-up chosen by the American Legion judges. As Elisha competed against the two other contestants, it became apparent that she was well prepared and had her own style of getting things done.
Elisha’s stage presence complemented her friendly and confident personality as she displayed engaging body dynamics and vocal exuberance during her oratory as she captured the audience. Within a few minutes of her prepared oratory, I felt confident she would score high. She demonstrated a deep knowledge regarding the Constitution as she delivered content with ease and precision. Her attire reflected professionalism consistent with the scholastic formality of the venue that would of made this nation’s “Founding Fathers” proud.
Considering her presentation, Elisha did score high as I had expected. Alas, despite her wonderful effort reflecting her dedication and commitment to the competition, Elisha placed second out of three contestants. My own assessment would have put her neck-and-neck with the first-place winner. Overall, she did a great job and I believe it reflected well upon the United States of America, the American Legion, her family and friends.
